Carnival in Salvador is literally millions of people on the streets, and many people prefer the comfort, organization and security offered by blocos * and camarotes** .
* A bloco is a Carnival group which follows a trio elétrico (a specially built truck with a band on top; trio elétricos are the "backbone" of Carnival in Bahia). An "abadá " is a Carnival outfit provided by the bloco allowing the wearer to enter the protected area within the cordão ("big rope") surrounding the bloco members. Purchasing an abadá is tantamount to joining a bloco.
Blocos are all-inclusive. In addition to music and security there is a support truck with the all-important bar and bathrooms.
** Carnival camarote s are their own rip-roaring Carnival parties overlooking the parade route. They are combination nightclubs/VIP boxes from where Carnival on the street can be observed without having to worry about getting one's pocket picked.
