"Lagoa" is "Lagoon", and this is the nearby freshwater Lagoa de Abaeté ("Abaeté" is a Portuguese surname).  The waters are surrounded by sands as white as snow and are believed by candomblé adepts here in Salvador to be the home of of the goddess Oxum.
