We take pride in the fact that our hotel (pousada) is well-located in terms of easy access to both old colonial Salvador and to the marvelous beaches along Bahia's Coast of Miracles. Barra do Jacuipe is one of the small towns located between Salvador and Praia do Forte. The town is named for and sits at the mouth of the Jacuipe River, where the river empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
What is unusual about this particular beach is the way its estuary is used by beachgoers. Now, as you may know, beaches in Brazil serve for a lot more than simply sunbathing and swimming. They are also places to eat, drink, dance and socialize. And during low tide in Jacuipe, when the estuary empties of water, tables and chairs are placed out across the wide expanse of sand. Eventually the tide turns and water begins to slowly filter back. And the tables and chairs? They don't go anywhere! There are few things more refreshing than sitting -- under the bright Bahian sun -- at a table, under an umbrella, with a cold drink before you and cool water beneath you. The only downside is that the waiters sometimes have a long way to go to provide table service. Mas não é problemo!
