Grande Hotel da Barra

The Grande Hotel da Barra is the seven-story building with the satellite dish on top.  The hill to the hotel's right (left in the photo) was the site of the settlement of the first Portuguese Captain of Bahia: Diogo Álvares Correa.  In the centuries since the Capitão's untimely death at the hand of Indians on the island of Itaparica, both sacred and profane have been served by this hill.   It is the site of the Igreja (church) de Santo Antônio da Barra (top of the hill) and the Forte de São Diogo (overlooking the water).  The fort helped to repel a Dutch invasion in 1638.

Welcome to Bahia!

Sea views in front of the hotel...

Our Grande Hotel da Barra is a small, full-service hotel positioned in what in some respects is the best location in Salvador da Bahia.  We sit just above a very lively beach (Porto da Barra), and the hotel has 26 balconies* looking out over the water of the bay (with lovely views to the island of Itaparica and the memorable sunsets behind the island).  The beach is illuminated at night, so swimming and after-sunset beachwalks are common among the locals.

We are also ten minutes away from Pelourinho and the Centro Histórico by taxi (a three-dollar ride), and Barra's nightlife is right outside our door (though the rooms themselves are quiet and you can hear the sound of the surf at night).

 ...and comfortable rooms inside.

We are not a boutique hotel, we are a beach hotel, and we pride ourselves on our easy-going atmosphere.  You want to walk through our front door in your swimming gear?  Please feel welcome!

And right from within the hotel itself we offer a broad range of tours and information with respect to Salvador and Bahia (covering music and dance, culture and history) in order to help you get the most out of your stay here.  We will happily arrange schooner trips, snorkeling and scuba-diving expeditions, and make travel arrangements for visits to Morro de São Paulo and other locations.

Kangas, bikinis, surf shorts, and sun block are all welcome too!

And last but not least, we are also very reasonably priced.

Any more questions? Send us an e-mail!  We'd love to hear from you!

* We offer priority to requests for balconies, and in the case of availability those requests will certainly be granted.  However we can't make any absolute guarantees and if a seaview is not available then the alternative would be a room overlooking our swimming pool.

The proximity to the beach remains, of course, the same.

Carnival notes for the Grande Hotel da Barra:

The hotel is set between the two Carnival circuits, a three-minute walk to the Barra-Ondina circuit, and a twenty-minute walk to the Campo Grande-Castro Alves Circuit (several minutes by taxi). It's close, but quiet.

We are taking Carnival 2006 Reservations!
